False ME229 To the Movies! Q: Was this a physically demanding film, or did they just CGI everything? Christina Ricci: No, Speed Racer was the most fun ever. We’d walk on set and there would be half a helicopter, and then the rest of the thing was just green. And, it’s an ensemble piece, so there’s a lot of other actors to look at and just say, “ What the hell is that? What scene are we shooting?” So, it just made it funny. We would just walk around and be like, “ All right, so the mountain’s over there, and what is that? Oh, that’s the edge of the cliff. Okay, well, I shouldn’t be over there.” It was just funny. It made it all really hilarious. And then, towards the end of the day, the green would start to make you feel like you were tripping, so that was also, at times, enjoyable. Matthew Fox: It’s unbelievable what it’s going to look like and how it’s going to transition, how it’s edited. I mean, traditional editing is pretty much just completely blown away here. It’s a whole new movement, transition. My little boy, literally every day asks me, “ When’s this movie coming out?” They Are the Champions By Fred Topel One of this summer’s most hotly anticipated movies is the long- awaited live- action version of Speed Racer. The old anime cartoon enjoys a cult following, but the movie is in your face. The Wachowskis, the directing duo behind the Matrix trilogy, came up with a way to reproduce the anime style with real actors. They shot the film on green screen stages so they could design all the locations in the computer and add all the effects they want. Speed Racer has a hot cast too. Emile Hirsch ( Into the Wild) plays Speed, with Christina Ricci as his girlfriend Trixie and Lost’s Matthew Fox as the mysterious Racer X. We caught up with Fox and Ricci, who now sports a dirty blonde coif, after they wrapped the film.
